5 Tips for Wearing Wide Leg Pants

Styling Wide Leg Pants

I love a good pair of wide leg pants, but they can be a tricky one to style. What type of top? Solid or pattern? Do you need to wear heels?

I’m going to break it down into 5 simple tips for styling a pair of wide leg pants. No need to over complicate it, but definitely a few things to keep in mind.

1) Show Off That Waistline

Show off your waistline, minimize excess bulk and balance out the total look by wearing something slim fitting on top. Wide leg pants can make for a very classic, elegant silhouette so they will look great with a well fitted, tucked in shirt or a crop top (As I’m wearing!). Because the colder months are upon us, you may also want to add layers such as a cropped blazer or chunky knitted cardigan. Check out my post on How to Achieve Chic Winter Layers.

2) Choose High-Waisted

There’s nothing chicer (and easier to style!) than a pair of high-waisted trousers and tucked-in top. Whether it’s with a blouse or T-shirt, this Katharine Hepburn inspired look will take you from the office to date night and is flattering on nearly every body shape.

3) Enlist the Help of Heels

Because the goal is to create the illusion of long and lean legs, wide-leg pants look their best when paired with a heel. Aim for a style that strikes the right balance between a modest heel height and just enough of a platform. Wedges and stacked heels will also help to create a streamlined appearance, and can provide versatility with heel height. Want even longer legs? Try wide leg pants with vertical stripes, such as the ones I’m wearing.

4) Stick to Clean Lines

Choose a pair of pants that fits nicely and seamlessly across the waist, gently falling away from the hips and thighs. Design details, like front pockets or a high waist, will draw attention to the midsection, so be cognizant of these added details if you’re trying to conceal your midsection. Instead, look for a tailored waistband, which will provide structure and flatten.

5) Play it Safe with Solids

Choose solid black or white pants for a more classic look. There is perhaps no singular clothing item more slimming than a well-fitting pair of wide black pants that hit right at your waist. The width of the pants’ hemlines only serves to make your waist look that much narrower. The looser shape of  wide-leg trousers also provides a great opportunity to master wearing white, especially during wintertime. Whether you pair them with a simple T-shirt or layer on a chunky knit, this cold-weather friendly pant style turns the summery hue into a winter favorite.

So there you have it! I hope you found my tips helpful. As always, I would love to know your thoughts.

Feel free to shop my look below. You will notice that I wasn’t able to link directly to my accessories (clutch, necklace and sunglasses). They were all purchased a few years ago and are no longer available. However, I’ve listed items that are very similar and something I would absolutely purchase.

Happy Shopping!
